UX Design - Unit: Information Visualisation and Typography (PU001662)

Unit Assignment

1. Aim&Purpose; What should I present?

2. How do I present? I thought the five UAL assessment criteria, and analyze how the learning outcomes are to be evidenced in this assignment.

According to the presentation, I interpreted the five UAL assessment criteria and analyzed the outcomes using mind map, and what do I need to show and what do I need to do?

Understand what I need to show, what is the purpose of doing so, and what is the connection with the five UAL assessment criteria. In this way, I can summarize at any time what I have done which belongs to the five UAL assessment criteria. Practical understanding will make me more influential and prepare for possible presentation at any time.

3. Make my own plan, and prepare the timetable.

After I analyzed the topic, I started to think about what themes and backgrounds are suitable for timeframes.

At first, I thought about Covid-19. Later I found that this topic might be done by many people, so I decided to look for a common topic.

I started to look for some information about the history of China. China is one of the oldest countries that still exists and has no faults. I decided to start with art. I am a Chinese. There is much ancient art in my impression. The background of the product is related to the background story when it was made, so maybe it is possible to find artworks of different dynasties that are related to the cultural background of the time. In this way, I will finally make a history of the development of Chinese artworks. I will look for some iterations. The works of art, and ink calligraphy or ink painting, will analyze whether ink painting and artwork have the same influence in different historical periods of China.

I think the fastest way is to check the existing website, see the analysis and interpretation of the professionals, and mobile the data, then organize the data and finally display it in an image format.

If I have time, I will make images of artworks and ink paintings and analize the data. Such two comparison pictures will give the audience the most intuitive feeling.

First, I quickly wrote about what to do.

Then, according to what to do, I made a preliminary schedule.

Some research related to China history from the internet:

Timeline of China History:

(LibGuides: Ancient China Inventions: Overview, 2021)

Many artworks that I found on the internet:

(All history: China artwork & China history, 2021)

4. The first tutorial, and feedback for my early work and new ideas.

I am an international student. In order to make sure that I understand the requirements of this project, I asked my tutor to explain it to me again. Here are some of the contents I recorded in the tutorial:

5. Start practical action, first check the relevant websites about the development history of Chinese cultural relics.

The final object is the evolution of Chinese characters and the evolution of clothes.

6. I checked several archaeological websites and found that there are many types and quantities of porcelain and pottery, so I had to choose a specific category for classification.

(All history: China artwork & China history, 2021)
Mixed picture from different resources (All history: China artwork & China history, 2021); (Chinese Archaeology, 2021)

Then I found that I could choose the development of Chinese tableware for research, so I found some relevant information from the Internet and sorted it out.

I plan to make a timeline similar to the following circle-based patterns.

My two Visualization idea were:

Also, I was going to collect data from these place.

My two visualisation should follow the development.

And I also participated in a tutorial, the instructor gave me many examples, I jot down some bits and keywords.

Some pictures found online.

a. Chinese characters "is" and "fish":

(Unknow: Development of China Character "is" , 2021)

That looks it is hard to define strokes.

The history of Chinese writing can be traced back to 6000 years ago

Stage 1: Oracle;

Phase two: Bronze writing;

Stage 3: Xiaozhuan;

Stage 4: Official script;

Stage five: regular script;

Stage six: running script;

Stage seven: cursive script;

c. The evolution and development of Chinese characters

c. I found that In the same period, the many different writing ways of “Dragon” in Oracle Bone Inscriptions.

d. The evolution of the pronunciation of "Dragon":

1. The simulation of famous contemporary scientists:

Li Rong, Shao Rongfang, and Pan Wuyun pronounce lioŋ,

Zheng Zhang Shangfang pronounced lɨoŋ,

Pu Liben is pronounced luawŋ,

Wang Li is pronounced lĭwoŋ,

Gaobenhan is pronounced li̯woŋ;

2. The ancient book "Zhongyuan Yinyun": Xiaoyun, and Ning Jifu is pronounced liuŋ;

3. Zheng Zhangshang is pronounced b·roŋ in the ancient book "Ancient Phonology"

e. Two books of famous fanqie phonetic notation.

Kangxi Dictionary

Song Ben pronunciation

(LibGuides: Ancient China Inventions: Overview, 2021)

f. Morden Chinese phonetic notation.

This clams obviously previous pronunciations contain many differences compare the modern Chinese pronunciation.

(Chinese Phonetics | EasyMandarin, 2021)

This seems wonderful, but I was wrong, because I tried many methods to count the pronunciation history of dialects, but this topic is never touched by me. The amount of data is far beyond my imagination. To learn the historical differences of Chinese pronunciation in such a short period of time, it is impossible. This still does not include dialect information.

g. then I tried to classify the Chinese character in some ways.

Chinese character scoring standards in different regions and different periods in China.

Finally, I plan to make two visualization in Chinese food culture and the development of tableware and the evolution and development of Chinese characters.

According to my previous research, I chose 3 main sources of information.

Ralated to the development of Chinese Characters, the pronunciation is also significant.

Besides, I am going to make a China's 8 Great Cuisines map.

(Chen, 2021)

and other data should be a table. It is make by Chinese food scoring standards in different regions and periods.

But this topic has nothing to do with the changes and development history of the Chinese character, so I decided to choose a topic that is relevant to the development of the Chinese character. Then, I thought that the development history of dialects is a very interesting direction. I searched some websites related to Chinese dialects. In the end, I decided to visulise a picture of the history of the development and change of Chinese dialects in China. This picture needs to show the time and place of the changes of dialects. My purpose is to show people intuitively how Chinese dialects are formed.

I made a scoring table for Chinese Characters in different periods according to the scoring criteria I did before.

1. Typography

I thought about how to typeset this information. This picture should include score statistics, the period and introduction of different forms of Chinese characters.

I found a data visualization graph from behance in my previous work folder. I think this can inspire me, but I forgot the source of this graph.

(Unknow: 2018)

Then I started thinking and making wireframes

This is my wireframe thinking process:

The basic wireframe is done, the layout idea is almost clear, and the prototype is made.

This is the thinking and production process of my prototype diagram:

This is my first data visualization diagram.

2. Next is the second data visualization chart-the history of the development and change of Chinese dialects in China

The purpose of this picture (what data needs to be visualized?):

This is the distribution map of contemporary Chinese dialects I found on the official Chinese website (obviously need to be translated into English).

(Mandarin Chinese | Wikiwand, 2021)

According to the time and place of change recorded in the literature, it is marked with arrows and colors on the map of contemporary China.

(1) Use sketch software to engrave different areas along the dialect map with vector tools and pen tools, and mark them with different colors;

(2) Copy the arrow mark drawn with sketch to this picture.

I have basically achieved my goal, which is: 1.Show the main dialect sections;2.Show the time and place of important dialect changes (dialect changes are affected by population migration); 2. Show important contemporary dialect translations and locations.

I selected several colours that were used on the different sections of the map on colorhunt.co and flatuicolors.com.

The last step is to translate all dialect names into English, and add the title and introduction.
